Toronto's Newest Ice Cream Shops

From creative cones to vegan ice cream there are a lot of new ice cream shops that are popping up in Toronto. Just in time for summer, here are some of the newest ice cream places to open in Toronto.

Tsujiri
Tsujiri brought matcha-based ice cream to Toronto earlier this year, and the store has been packed ever since! The first location in the city is located steps away from Yonge-Dundas Square, and the menu features Tsujiri’s signature matcha-infused treats, including the always popular Tsujiri sundae, made with toasted brown rice, matcha soft serve, and red bean paste. They also have vanilla soft serve available.

Fugo Desserts
Opening on June 25, 2016, Fugo Desserts is already building a reputation for creative offerings. Fugo Desserts is offering an abundance of unique flavours, with five hard serve options and six of Fugo’s signature creations. All of the ice cream is made in-house or at the owners homes. Flavours include the Good Morning, made with vanilla ice cream, an espresso shot and a chocolate wafer stick, and the Crispy Comb, made with vanilla soft serve, real honeycomb, and corn flakes.

Death in Venice
Death in Venice isn’t a stand-alone shop, but a gelato counter located in the Constantinople Bakery on Queen West. Opening earlier this year, Death in Venice is known for unique flavours like Thai Peanut Soy Fish, made with soy sauce, peanuts, and fish sauce. Their flavours change daily and come in a cone or a cup.

Arctic Bites
Located in Kensington Market, Arctic Bites is the first ice cream shop in Canada to offer rolled ice cream, inspired by the ice cream found in Thailand. The polarolls are made in full view of customers, rolled on cold plates with fresh ingredients and toppings added to each order. There may be a little bit of a wait, especially on those hot days, but trust us, the wait is worth it.

Sweet Jesus (Queen East)
Sweet Jesus took soft serve to another level last summer, with crazy concoctions on La Carnita’s dessert menu. Now, a  year later they have two standalone locations, including the latest at La Carnita’s Queen East spot. At this location, you’ll find exclusive “Pimped Out” soft serves, like The Fluffer Nutter, made with chocolate and vanilla twist, coated with marshmallow fluff, Ruffles, toasted peanuts, and peanut butter sauce.

Junked Food Co.
Junked Food Co. is known for an all junk food menu, but this year, ice cream has been added to the mix! Made in the usual Junked Food Co. style, you can get Smoreo dessert in a cone. Starting with vanilla soft serve, the cone is topped with smashed Oreos, a freshly made Belgian waffle, white and milk chocolate drizzle and housemade marshmallow fluff. Stacked high, Junked Food Co., is a serious contender for some of the best soft serve ice cream in the city.

NanaShake
Located in North York, NanaShake is offering vegan, banana-based ice cream for the masses. The menu offers six signature soft serves with flavours like pistachio, chocolate mint, and spiced date, with fresh ingredients being mixed in. Not only is everything packed with flavour, but it is also a healthy alternative to the classic ice cream. Everything is made on site and each flavour is truly unique due to the use of plant-based ingredients.

Seven Lives Paleteria
An offshoot of Seven Lives Taco, Seven Lives Paleteria opened quietly this spring. While the main focus is the Mexican paletas, they also have a small ice cream menu, offering unique flavours and combinations like the Dole Whip Floats.  The Mangonada is made with mango juice and puckery chamoy, a sauce made with pickled fruit, which is then poured over mango soft serve and topped with candied tamarind.
