Location, Location, Location!

Before you start shopping for flowers, it’s important to take stock of your backyard. You’ll want to take these three things into consideration:

  1. Size Of Backyard: The size of your backyard will help you determine the size of your garden bed. You’ll also want to pay attention to sunny spots and areas that are level.

  2. Size Of Flower Bed: This is dependent on how experienced you are as a gardener. If you’re a novice, we suggest a garden bed of 100 square feet to get started.

  3. Garden Design: This is where you can have fun! Garden beds can be of different shapes and have multiple layers and heights to them. You can also think about any garden decor pieces you would like to add.

Flower Power

Perennials vs. Annuals

  • Perennials: Continue to grow season after season but remain dormant through the winter.

  • Annuals: Live for only one growing season, which means you’ll have to replant them every spring.

Full Sun vs. Shade

There are three things to look for when choosing your flowers:

  1. Full Sun: These flowers prefer up to six hours of direct sunlight a day

  2. Partial Sun: They thrive with a balance of direct sunlight and shade, and only need about three to six hours of sunshine a day

  3. Shade: Shade flowers do well with less than three hours of sunlight per day

What to Plant

The types of flowers you want to plant are completely up to you. Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Begonia (shade, annuals)

  • Pansies (partial sun, annuals)

  • Geraniums (full sun, annuals)

  • Daffodil (full or partial sun, perennial)

  • Tulip (partial sun, perennial)

  • Iris (full sun, perennial)

  • Lily (partial sun, perennial)

Best Time of Year to Plant

This is dependent on what type of flowers you are planting. Perennials are best to plant after the final frost of spring, while annuals will thrive when planted in the summer.

It’s All About That Base (Soil)

Prepare Your Flower Bed

Start by removing your grass with a flat shovel or apply an herbicide. If you choose to dig, do it 4 or 5 inches around the perimeter. Then clear any debris and loosen the soil, working in the organic soil you’ve purchased.

Soil Bed

When deciding which soil to use as the base of your garden bed, look for anything that has been pre-mixed or blended for flowers or perennials. At this point, you can add granular fertilizer into the soil or you can opt to add liquid fertilizer at a later time.
